Milan

Monuments and surrounding districts near Hotel Poliziano Fiera
The new Zone contains not only very highly populated districts but it also has some buildings that are of great artistic interest and some small village-like areas that in spite of being swallowed up by the city, continue to live with traditions handed down from generation to generation. Some of the buildings of interest from the artistic point of view are Villa Simonetta (headquarters of the Municipal School of Music), the Monumental Cemetery, the Carthusian monastery of Garegnano, Villa Schleiber, Villa Caimi and the fourteenth century Torchiera farmhouse. But there are also many particularly beautiful entrances and courtyards to be admired among the private residences. Also worthy of admiration are the many typical old Italian-style tenements in the Sempione district that remind us of the city’s industrial development at the end of the Nineteenth century, and the farmhouses at the borders of the city where some of the agricultural traditions of the families that used to live in the villages at the gates of the city still survive. The Zone is also the home of historical industries that played an important part in the history of Milan and Italy: Alfa Romeo in the Portello district, Carminati and Toselli in Messina Street, better known as "The Steam Factory" and the Mosca Mill in Lomazzo Street (the first in the city to be hydraulically powered). But the first thing that greets anyone arriving in Milan from the motorways that come out at P.le Kennedy is the "Montagnetta", i.e. "il Montestella", built from the rubble that accumulated during the last World War and particularly dear to the elderly because they have many memories here. Today it is a magnificent park where you can walk, jog and relax under the trees forgetting you are in the city.
