Expo Milan 2015

In March 2008, 157 cities, which form the “Bureau International des Expositions”, submitted their bid to host the 2015 Expo. Milan was the winner.

The last time Milan hosted the Expo was in 1906 when the chosen theme was Transportation. The city, due to its strategic position at the centre of Europe, was the ideal venue at the time. The Expo was built in the then fashionable Liberty style in order to show the latest advances in that sector. Once again, in 2015, Milan has chosen a theme which will not only place it at the centre of Europe but at the centre of the world.

EXPO 2015 - THEME
The aim of an Expo is to have a theme which is of universal interest. The one chosen for the Milan edition, starting on the 1st May 2015 and ending on the 31st October 2015 is “Feeding the Planet – Energy for Life”. The Expo 2015 in Milan will bring to the forefront the challenges facing us with regards to the methods of production and distribution of enough food to feed the ever growing population of the world. Furthermore the Expo 2015 aims to educate the world of how to eat more healthily as well as to highlight the pros and cons of Genetically Modified Foods.

Food is the planet’s vital energy source, which must be produced in a sustainable and economic way in order to ensure the healthy growth of the world’s population.

By 2050, it is estimated that the world population will reach 9 billion. The Expo 2015 aims to confront the challenges, and to propose solutions, in order to ensure that quality is maintained so as to ensure a healthier standard of living throughout the world.  
 
EXPO 2015 - OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Expo 2015 in Milan are :
 
-       Safe and healthy food in order to eliminate famine, drought and malnutrition.
-       The reduction of obesity, cardio-vascular diseases, tumours and epidemics
-       Innovations introduced throughout the production food chain to improve nutritional value
-       Health education to encourage the correct diet and therefore improve healthy eating
-       Enhancing respect for the environment
-       Research into finding ways of protecting the environment, improving conservation of forests and other natural habitats, avoiding drought, food shortages as well as over fishing of rivers and oceans.

EXPO 2015 – THE VENUE
The Expo venue is close to the Milan Fair grounds in Rho and will cover an area of around 1.7 million square meters and is 1.5 kilometres long. The venue is a purpose built destination with clusters based on food production and not on countries including :
 
-       Fruit and Vegetables
-       Spices
-       Bio Mediterranean
-       Islands
-       Arid Zones
 
An estimated 21 million visitors are expected to visit the Expo 2015 in Milan.
